What's New and Exciting!
How you can stay safe during your winter hikes!
Winter hikes are an incredibly popular activity in Whispering Hills and surrounding area. Your safety is of utmost importance to us. We want to ensure that our residents and guests are having a great AND safe time during their stay here. Winter hikes are considerably more dangerous than summer hikes so a bit more preparation and planning ahead is required. Blackburn News has recently written an article on this subject and we want to talk about the information in the article, which you have find in this link.
Warm winter boots are a must!
It is important to wear the appropriate footwear for winter hikes. According the article "If the snow is deeper than the height of your boot, snowshoes should be worn, and for overly icy conditions studded boots should be considered." We recommend carrying studs and snowshoes regardless, because the path conditions can vary widely, and you want to be prepared for that. Another important factor is that you are going to burn more calories on winter hikes, therefore, it is important to have lots of snacks on hand to re-fuel when the tank gets empty! You don't want to be in the middle of a hike and be low on energy. Due to the nature of winter hikes you are more prone to accidents so you need to make sure that your body is happy and healthy.
Try and always hike with a friend, as there is safety in numbers. If you are planning on hiking alone, make sure that you let someone know what time your hike is, for how long and the trails that you will be hiking on. Be sure to stick to the trail. That way if someone is anticipating you to be finished at a certain time, they can potentially call for help if you are out much longer than originally planned. Solo hikes can be a soothing and calming activity, just make ensure that you are taking the proper safety precautions to ensure that you get home safe and sound. Safe hiking everyone!
